What is gynecomastia surgery?

Men with gynecomastia have benign enlargement of the tissue in both or one breast. The breasts may also feel tender and there may be an increase in the size of the nipples. Several factors can lead to this abnormal tissue development.

Gynecomastia can be caused by a hormonal imbalance. This can occur due to hormonal changes during puberty or may be a result of the aging process. Men who have lost a great deal of weight often find that they still have the appearance of enlarged breasts due to excessive skin in the chest area. Certain medications can also result in the development of breast tissue in men.

Before any surgery is carried out, it will be necessary to undertake a full medical assessment to discover the reason for the appearance of the condition.

What does male breast reduction surgery involve?

Gynecomastia surgery in London may involve the use of more than one technique to remove tissue and provide a more sculpted appearance to the chest area. Typically, the procedure combines liposuction to remove fat tissue with the surgical removal of excess breast tissue and skin. The incisions will be made in the nipple areola area to make them as inconspicuous as possible.

The most suitable technique for your problem and the positioning of the scars will be discussed in your pre-operative consultation with Miss Prousskaia. The procedure will last between one and two hours under general anaesthetic. When you wake after surgery, you will be wearing a supportive garment to protect the chest area. You will need to stay in the hospital overnight.

How long will it take to recover?

Although gynecomastia reduction surgery is a safe and straightforward procedure, it is essential to give your body the time to heal by resting and avoiding too much activity for a few weeks afterwards. It would be helpful if you could arrange to take four weeks off work. Sports and any everyday activities likely to exert the chest area, such as hoovering or dog walking, should be avoided for four to six weeks after the procedure. More strenuous activity such as weightlifting is best avoided altogether for three months.

During the healing period, you will need to wear a supportive garment that will support the new contours of your chest and reduce swelling. You will be able to discuss resuming your everyday activities, including sports and gym workouts for your lower body, with Miss Prousskaia at your follow-up appointment.

What is the cost of surgery ?

The cost of an initial consultation starts at £200. The total cost of the procedure, including hospital stay, and aftercare starts at £6380. Prices will vary according to your specific requirements. The final cost of your surgery will only be confirmed after your initial consultation.
