Prominent ears can cause you to feel self-conscious, right from childhood.
You may have been teased in school by other children and later on it may limit your choice of hairstyle.
Pinnaplasty is a neat operation to remedy this, which will improve the shape or position of your ears.
In this page, we look at:
• How Does Ear Correction Surgery Work?
• Why choose the Elena Prousskaia Clinic for Your Ear Pinning Surgery?
• Is there alternative treatment?
Elena will work on the skin and cartilage through discrete incisions placed behind each ear, which means the scars will not be visible. There are a number of techniques she can use to reshape or ‘pin back’ the ears which we will discuss together at length during your examination in my clinic.
It is normal to have a second consultation, for you to ask any further questions, once you have had time to consider the different surgical options. After the decision is made we will carefully prepare for your surgery.
Elena is one of the UK’s most sought after aesthetic surgeons for her artistry, calm and friendly manner. Ms Elena Prousskaia has been carrying out aesthetic and plastic surgery procedures for more than 20 years. Elena trained for eight years in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and since then has held leading UK and internatal Fellowships to enhance her surgical skills.
As an NHS Consultant Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon at Southmead Hospital, she dedicated several years to complex microsurgical reconstruction and general plastic surgery. During this time at North Bristol Trust, she particularly enjoyed rebuilding patients giving them their body and confidence back. At present, Ms Prousskaia runs her own successful private practice performing full range of plastic and aesthetic surgery for face, body and breast. Elena Prousskaia consults in several clinics around the UK. Please see the ‘Our Locations’ tab in the menu for exact addresses or call us to discuss your closest location.
Other types of ear surgery can be indicated in cases of congenital disorders and malformations like microtia, anotia, constricted ear etc. This type of surgery is considered reconstructive surgery and is different from aesthetic pinnaplasty.
The want for ear pinning surgery is more common in a young patients, but can be performed on patients of any age.
Elena will examine you during a consultation to discuss your outcome. What is important for successful treatment is that the ears be in proportion to the size and shape of the face and head.
You should rest and avoid any strenuous activity in the first two to three weeks. The full benefits of pinnaplasty may not be visible until six weeks after your surgery. Most patients make a quick recovery from pinnaplasty.
Any surgical treatment involves certain risks. It is important that you understand all the risks associated with the pinnaplasty procedure. Your decision to have this operation should be based on your careful evaluation of all the possible risks and the potential benefits. Most patients undergoing this surgery do not experience complications. However, you should discuss all possible risks and your tolerance of complications with your consultant plastic surgeon, Miss Prousskaia, in order to make sure that you fully understand the implications and consequences of having a pinnaplasty. Elena will provide you with further information with the risks and provide you with a detailed consent form during your consultations. This will help you to minimise the risks.
This procedure can be performed under general anesthetic or local anesthetic and sedation. Surgical time is about an hour and a half, but can vary depending on the complexity of each individual case. Elena will make a cut to the back of the ear and peel off some skin from the cartilage. The shape of the cartilage is changed so that the ear is closer to the head. The wounds are then closed with stitches and a dressing is applied.
