Otoplasty, available in Swindon through Elena Prousskaia, one of the UK’s leading cosmetic surgeons, is a procedure that can improve the appearance of someone’s ears and also do so much to boost confidence and self-esteem.
Also known as pinnaplasty, or ear pinning, the procedure alters the shape, size and prominence of a patient’s ears, typically making them appear more in balance with the rest of the face and addressing issues of them sticking out away from the head.
The impact this surgery can have can be truly wonderful to see – and by that we don’t mean solely the physical change. It is also the impact it has on the patient, often addressing what has been a concern for many years or even decades.
Ears are always a prominent facial feature, and this perhaps never more so than in an era where wearing face masks is common and so other features are less visible.
Concern that your ears are overly prominent in some way can be hugely upsetting, this often stemming from childhood where there can be teasing that has an impact that then lasts a lifetime.
Otoplasty can address this, a simple procedure that corrects the balance of the ears and instantly removes all that concern
Otoplasty is typically suitable for anyone who is looking to address the over prominence of their ears, bar young children.
Of course, suitability is largely down to the individual – there is no medical necessity to have ears corrected and so if someone had prominent ears, but this did not affect them, if they were perfectly happy with their ears there would be no benefit to surgery.
Instead, it is for those for whom the appearance of their ears is a concern or an aspect of their appearance they wish to alter.
Suitability would then be assessed at a detailed consultation, in Ms Prousskaia’s case this would be at The Ridgeway Hospital located in Swindon, Wiltshire.
Part of the prestigious BMI Healthcare group. This consultation is the prospective patient’s chance to talk and discuss their concerns and for the surgeon to listen and then suggest their recommended course of action.
A patient’s full medical history would be taken into consideration, this to ensure there are no medical reasons that would render the patient unsuitable.
A second consultation is then usual.
If a patient is deemed to be suitable, a detailed quote would be provided, this inclusive of all costs.
A range of techniques for otoplasty are available and so it is important to choose an experienced surgeon such as Ms Prousskaia who is skilled in all approaches – this ensures the best possible results are achieved, rather than using a one-size-fits-all approach.
The procedure used will depend on the precise nature of the pinnaplasty, for instance is it merely to reduce how much the ears stick out from the head or is reshaping and / or resizing required? This would have been discussed at the initial consultation.
While procedures therefore vary there are certain commonalities.
Typically, a cut will be made to the back of the ear and some skin peeled away from the cartilage, the shape of the cartilage then altered, this helping to bring the ears back closer to the head.
A relatively simple otoplasty procedure would take between an hour and 90 minutes, but more complex operations naturally take longer. The procedures can be performed under local or general anaesthetic.
Otoplasty is a procedure that is considered safe bar risks inherent in all surgery (such as infection) and produces excellent results – Ms Prousskaia would happily show examples of previous procedures as part of the consultation.
Recovery is also typically straightforward, although some strenuous activity should be avoided for a number of weeks; there will also be some swelling but this will naturally fade as the ears fully heal.
Any pain is usually mild at worst and can be managed through standard painkillers.
The cost of any procedure is based on the facility used – in this case a superb private hospital in Swindon, the surgeon fees and also those for the anaesthetist fees.
At the time of writing, surgery costs with Elena Prousskaia are from £4,800.
A quote would be provided at the detailed consultation – the patient then allowed to consider this at home at their leisure.

It remained a small market town until around 1848 but this changed as it gained connection to London through the birth of the modern railway network.
As benoîts a town of such size, there have been many famous and notable people who were born in Swindon or have resided there. The list includes Gilbert O’Sullivan, Julian Clary, Rick Davies – founding member of Superrtramp – and Justin Hayward of the Moody Blues.
The want for ear pinning surgery is more common in a young patients, but can be performed on patients of any age.
Elena will examine you during a consultation to discuss your outcome. What is important for successful treatment is that the ears be in proportion to the size and shape of the face and head.
You should rest and avoid any strenuous activity in the first two to three weeks. The full benefits of pinnaplasty may not be visible until six weeks after your surgery. Most patients make a quick recovery from pinnaplasty.
Any surgical treatment involves certain risks. It is important that you understand all the risks associated with the pinnaplasty procedure. Your decision to have this operation should be based on your careful evaluation of all the possible risks and the potential benefits. Most patients undergoing this surgery do not experience complications. However, you should discuss all possible risks and your tolerance of complications with your consultant plastic surgeon, Miss Prousskaia, in order to make sure that you fully understand the implications and consequences of having a pinnaplasty. Elena will provide you with further information with the risks and provide you with a detailed consent form during your consultations. This will help you to minimise the risks.
This procedure can be performed under general anesthetic or local anesthetic and sedation. Surgical time is about an hour and a half, but can vary depending on the complexity of each individual case. Elena will make a cut to the back of the ear and peel off some skin from the cartilage. The shape of the cartilage is changed so that the ear is closer to the head. The wounds are then closed with stitches and a dressing is applied.
