About Nipple Reconstruction & Secondary Breast Correction Surgery

Nipple reconstruction surgery is a quick and simple procedure, which is done under local anaesthetic.

It is often seen as the finishing touch to your  breast reconstruction and makes your breast look very natural indeed.

Nipple Reconstruction Surgery Procedure

An Inverted nipple can be corrected very easily through 2 mm incisions around the nipple. Scars are almost invisible.

Sometimes small secondary adjustments to the reconstructed breast can be done at the same time, such as a contralateral reduction, uplift, or lipofilling to the flap to help ensure matching shape and volume. This is a decision we will make together after a consultation and examination in my clinic. Sometimes more than one visit is needed in order to make the right choice.

What To Expect From A Consultation

Elena always offers lengthy, detailed consultations so she can fully understand the aims you are requesting. Elena can then talk through the available options, results and after care as well as the operation itself. You will then have a second consultation prior to your planned surgery to give yourself time to decide if you are happy to proceed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Aftercare And Risks Nipple Correction?

Similar to all surgeries, nipple surgery is accompanied by certain risks, including the following:

  • Bleeding
  • Infection
  • Swelling
  • Scars
  • Nipples that invert again after surgery
  • A loss of breast sensation temporarily
  • The loss of the ability to breastfeed permanently

Elena will provide you with further information with the risks and provide you with a detailed consent form during your consultations. This will help you to minimise the risks.

Are You Considering Nipple Correction?

Nipple reconstruction is often done under local anesthetic. This means that Elena would normally use a needle to inject numbing medication into the area where the reconstructed nipple will be. If you have local anesthetic, you will be awake during the procedure.

What Happens During Nipple Reconstruction?

A variety of different techniques exist for reconstruction of the nipple and its surrounding areolar tissue. These include the use of skin grafts taken from other regions of the body, local flaps of breast skin that are shaped into a nipple, or the sharing of tissue from the opposite nipple-areolar region. Additional techniques such as tattooing may be used to add color to the tissue if needed. Nipple reconstruction may be performed as a single surgical procedure, or combined with other breast reconstruction procedures.

Recovery After Nipple Reconstruction?

You should avoid all sport activities, housework such as hovering, driving, dog walking for at least 1-2 weeks following surgery and any weight lifting or strenuous activities for up to 4 weeks following the surgery. The visibility of your scars will depend on the technique used and on the biological response of your body to surgery and healing. Generally the scars after this type of surgery are almost invisible by the end of the year. After you have seen Ms Prousskaia for your four weeks follow up you can discuss beginning a gym routine focused on lower body strength.

What Is The After Care For Nipple Correction?

The Elena Prousskaia Clinic prides itself on the quality of its aftercare so we’ll make absolutely sure you know what to expect, and how much rest is needed. We’ll give you specific instructions that may include how to care for your breasts following surgery, medications to apply or take orally to aid healing and reduce the risk of infection, and when to follow-up with Elena.

How Long Does Surgery Take?

Generally speaking this surgery takes around 30 minutes, although this varies depending on the nature of the procedure.

Is Nipple Correction Painful?

After surgery it is normal to experience some discomfort, the level of which varies widely amongst patients. There is rarely prolonged pain unless there is a complication and in all cases you will be prescribed pain medication.

Can This Procedure Be Carried Out With Others?

This procedure can be performed on its own or with other breast procedures. Elena will discuss all possible procedures and results with you during your consultation.

What Would My Expected Results Be?

Elena prides herself on taking the time to truly understand a patient’s aims and discussing what result will work best given the patient’s body shape and size. Although good results are expected, the body is not symmetric and almost everyone has some degree of unevenness, which may not be recognized in advance. The more realistic your expectations as to results, the better your results will be in your eye. You will have at least two consultations with Elena where she ensures that she meets your expectations and she will always try to achieve your desired results.

Can I Smoke Or Vape Before My Surgery?

Elena does not operate on patients that regularly smoke or vape. To be considered for this procedure you must refrain from smoking or vaping for 3 months before and after your surgery.
