Follicular Unit Excision, or FUE, is a popular procedure to harvest donor’s hair.
Hair is important to us all; it is one of the first things people look at when they see us, and many of us feel more confident and even more attractive, when we have a full head of healthy hair. Because hair is so important, the medical world has been striving hard over the years to find procedures – both surgical and non-invasive – to help those with hair loss problems restore their self-esteem and confidence.
During the surgery (which is performed under local anaesthesia, making the procedure almost painless) small, circular incisions are made in the skin around each follicle unit to separate it from the tissue surrounding it. Then, each unit is extracted from the scalp, leaving a tiny, open hole.
Depending upon how much hair the transplant surgeon deems necessary for the hair restoration to be successful, the above process is repeated, and this can take anything from a couple of hours, to a couple of days for larger sessions. The holes left behind from the extractions are tiny, at just 1mm in diameter, and often take as little as a week to ten days to completely heal. All that is left once the holes have healed are barely visible white scars buried in the hair at the back and sides of the scalp.
The patient is provided pre-op and post-op instructions two weeks before the procedure. On the day of the procedure we preferably trim the hair using a zero-trimmer, the head of the patient is then marked, the areas for hair implantation with a blue marker and the areas for hair extraction with a red marker. The patient is then given a local anaesthetic injection. The patients are normally offered one thousand to three thousand grafts as per requirement. The grafts for the forelock, crown and head are taken from the occipital area using a manual or motorized punch, whereas the grafts for the front hairline are taken from the parietal areas. The grafts are placed in a Petri dish as collected and separated into singles hair(s), doubles and triples. The singles are used for the front hair line and the rest are used for the forelock, crown and rest of the head. The hair are stored at 8-10 degrees centigrade as the Hair Surgeon makes multiple tiny incisions for the grafts to be later implanted by forceps in those incisions. The whole procedure takes approximately eight to twelve hours depending upon number of grafts offered. Post op instructions provided after procedure and patient is reviewed at one month, three months, six months, and twelve months post procedure. Pictures from multiple views are taken pre and post procedure, and then at twelve months post procedure.
Since scarring after the procedure is minimal, those wishing to wear their hair in a short style might find this method of transplantation advantageous, as may those who wish to resume physical activities such as sports, as soon as possible after surgery, or who have a poorly healed scalp from undergoing other transplant methods.
Since the entire donor area must be shaved if a patient is undergoing a large session of FUE, there may be some who find this problematic from a cosmetic standpoint, but it’s important to remember that this will be a short-term concern.
Hair transplant surgery has developed into a popular and safe procedure that many people with hair loss issues turn to, and below are 5 of the top reasons why it might be beneficial for you:
The grafting that occurs during hair transplant surgery, allows hair to grow naturally in that area for years to come, making the procedure one that you do not need to repeat frequently.
While there are other options for those who have lost some, or all of their hair, such as wigs, hair transplant surgery encourages your own hair to grow back naturally, and when given the choice, wouldn’t you rather have your own hair on your head?
It’s not just older people who experience hair loss; there are a number of genetic disorders and conditions that can cause young people to lose their hair, too, and incredibly, hair transplant surgery has been known to correct some of these conditions so that they never occur again.
Whether we like it or not, how we look can have a profound effect upon how we feel, and everybody deserves to feel good about themselves. If you’re experiencing hair loss and your confidence is at an all-time low, transplant surgery will help restore your hair and give your self-esteem a much-deserved boost.
